Amusing incidents in the Navy

March 8, 2013

This is an excerpt from my second book, “Memory Harvest of a Sharecropper’s Son,” which is now available in Amazon Kindle format and in printed format. This story is about amusing incidents in the Navy.
One thing you run into in life is people who are not what they seem to be. People lie or exaggerate because “no one” knows different, or so they think.
In Navy boot camp at San Diego, one of our people was caught writing a letter to his girl friend in a class instead of taking notes on what the instructor was saying. He was called up in front of the class and told to read what he had written, which he did not want to do. The instructor insisted.
The young recruit told his girl friend in the letter that we had sailed a couple of days before to Korea and shelled a North Korean installation and then sailed back to California. First of all, a two-day trip sailing to Korea was impossible. The guy was really embarrassed over the lie he was telling his girl friend, which was read to the class. I do not know if he continued to lie to his girl friend after that or not.
In electronics training school at Memphis about our second week, a young assistant instructor was getting acquainted with our class before the instructor walked in. He had an exaggerated Texas accent. He asked if there were any Texans in the class. Several of us held up our hands. With an exaggerated Texas drawl, he said that he was from Muleshoe, Texas.
One of the men who had held up his hand as being from Texas said, “Where?”
The young AI laughed and with a drawl said, “I grew up in Muleshoe, Texas.” The student said, “I don’t remember you and I lived in Muleshoe my entire life.” The young AI looked shocked.
The instructor had just walked in and he began laughing. He explained to us that this young AI had only been there a few weeks and had been claiming to be from Muleshoe and using that exaggerated Texas accent. The young AI was actually from somewhere in the Midwest and thought Muleshoe was a fictional place from the movies. He was just playing games with the students and got caught. It was funny at that time.
Muleshoe, Texas is a small town near the New Mexico border between Lubbock, Texas and Clovis, New Mexico.
